BBL 2016 Brisbane Heat vs Adelaide Strikers Full Match Highlights

Adelaide Strikers played hosts to the Brisbane Heat and after winning the toss asked them to bat first. What turned out was truly a scintillating performance from the Heat batsmen. Brendon McCullum led from the front and along with Jimmy Peirson, provided a blazing start to his team. Both of them were aggressive in their approach and smashed the Strikers’ bowlers right from the word go.

Baz (McCullum) was particularly severe on the likes of Micheal Neser and in a single over from the bowler, ripped him apart for 25 runs. At the other end, Peirson, too, complemented his skipper shots for shots and scored his runs at a terrific rate.

The Strikers had an opportunity to break the partnership and sent Baz back in the pavilion, but Richardson dropped his catch and gave him a lifeline. The dropped chance, however, didn’t prove too costly for them as Pollard, in his very next over, got both the set batsmen out on successive deliveries. This brought the Strikers right back in the match and helped them to slip in some quite overs.

Chris Lynn scored three massive sixes before he was dismissed by Jordan for 29. However, the credit of his wicket should go to Pollard, who took a brilliant catch at the mid-wicket boundary. With the wickets falling, Brisbane’s run-rate took a beating as they managed to score only 57 runs in 9 (between 7 and 15) overs.

With the last 5 overs left, they needed someone to step up to the plate and helped them finish with a bang. This job was done by Alex Ross, who channeled his inner McCullum and went berserk in the slog overs. He was slow to begin with (scored 10 off 16), but once he got going there was no stopping him. In the end, he managed to score 64 off mere 36 balls and helped his team to get 206 runs on the board.

If Adelaide had to chase down the target, they needed a solid start from their openers. And they exactly got that from Ben Dunk and Jake Weatherald, who took their team off to a flier. Dunk was the aggressor between the two and scored his runs at a stunning strike-rate of over 200. Wetherald was not far behind as he, too, struck the ball powerfully and scored the runs at an equally good pace.

As a result of their amazing scoring rate, the pair brought up the 100-run partnership in just 9 overs. With 74 required from 8 overs and all 10 wickets in hand, the Strikers were definitely the favorite to win the contest. But then came two overs from Mark Steketee and Ben Cutting, respectively, which changed the course of the game. Firstly, it was Steketee, who broke the massive opening stand by getting rid of Weatherald (52) and then Cutting got the big man, Dunk (85), out in the very next over.

Head and Hodge tried their best to swing the match in their team’s favor, but the Heat bowlers bowled exceptionally well in the death overs and gave nothing away for the Strikers’ batsmen to capitalize on. In the end, Brisbane Heat was able to open their account with a win, as they won the match by 10 runs.
