Watch South Africa vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Match Day 4 On December 29 at Tens Live
Sri Lanka would have hoped for a better end to the 4th day of their 1st test against South Africa. The odds were stacked against them from overnight, as they approached the task of chasing the elusive 488-run target set by their fierce opponents.
During the initial stages of the Sri Lankan innings, a formidable effort was put forward, as Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva eeked out a strong partnership that yielded 87 runs, with Karunaratne and Silva ending with 43 and 48 runs each. However, this glimmer of hope was then snuffed out as the pair were broken up Karunaratne suffered the fate of miscommunication, being run out after having faced 113 balls.
After that dismal damper in the Sri Lankan desires for a comeback, not much was to be said for Kusal Perera, as he was caught by Quinton de Kock after scoring just 6 runs. Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews tied in scoring 58 runs each, but attempted one too many reckless shots to last any longer.
On the other side of the innings which started the day, South Africa had it easy, managing to declare after just 10 and a half overs had elapsed. Quinton de Kock was the anchor for his team on Day 4, scoring 69 runs before the declaration and before he himself was given lbw off a ball from Rangana Herath.
Overall, commendations must be given to the Sri Lankan batsmen, as they exercised a fair degree of discernment and patience in their approach to the South African attack. However, this effort was not consistent and distracted and reckless moments cost Sri Lanka wickets that they would have done better having preserved. The likelihood of a Sri Lankan comeback seems dim; however, in this gloriously uncertain endeavor, we shall wait and see.
