Watch South Africa vs Sri Lanka 2nd test Complete Cricket highlight day 1 on January 2, 2017 at Tens Live
Dean Elgar was the man of the moment on the 1st Day of the 2nd Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka today. He fought with a reserved kind of confidence that has become his trademark approach, earning him 29 runs over a century and allowing him to serve as steady ship for his teammates, who experienced pendulum-like fortunes throughout the day’s play.
He pulled off an intense rescue mission after South Africa was caught in the midst of uncertainty at 169 for 5 with 30 whole overs remaining. The day saw the dismissals of Stephen Cook and JP Duminy without either having affected the scorecard; while Sri Lanka’s bowling was sharp for the most part, with the likes of Suranga Lakmal and Lahiru Kumara diminishing the efforts of Cook, Duminy and Temba Buvama.
When it came to Sri Lanka’s bowling, they did not appear to use the surface well suited to pace, much to their advantage. The wickets claimed were punctuated by prolonged dry spells and lose ends, giving South Africa the opportunity to tighten their own, with skipper, Faff du Pleiss and left-handed batsman, Quinton de Kock picking up the slack after the exit of Elgar thanks to a catch from Kusal Mendis.
Apart from Elgar’s outstanding performance, along with sparks of excitement intermittently alighting today’s showing, the atmosphere was considerably sedate, and could do with a fiercer attack from the Sri Lankan bowlers tomorrow in their effort to remove the remaining South African wickets. It remains to be seen if South Africa can pull off the same dominating performance recorded in the 1st test, especially in the similar scenario of having to bounce back from a performance that was not much to write home about on Day 1.
